It’s not just a stereotype! Away from the city center, neighborhoods feel more like communities and there’s often more connection between the locals. You’ll see a lot of the same friendly faces in the local businesses and parks, but in more urbanized areas, it’s difficult to feel that connection.
Sunday farmers markets, community sports events, and small businesses add a lot of charm to San Jose neighborhoods. For many people, these features make communities more liveable and welcoming.

Less Traffic and Still Commuter-Friendly
Getting off the beaten path a little bit into a residential neighborhood can reduce road noise. With fewer throughroads and traffic-avoiding shortcuts in the area, your home will be much quieter.
With less traffic, your neighborhood will be more walkable and child-friendly too.
For obvious reasons, most families would prefer to raise children in areas away from main streets and busy roads. In general, the communities further away from Downtown San Jose become less dense and get fewer vehicles passing through.
Having quieter and safer streets shouldn’t hurt your commute to work though. San Jose is a well-connected city of light rail and bus routes, with short wait times on popular routes. Even from the furthest nooks of the city, San Jose residents will have plenty of ways into work.
More Access to Nature
One of the cornerstones of San Jose living has always been the natural surroundings. The Santa Cruz Mountains and the Diablo Range loom on either side of San Jose, giving locals beautiful views and plenty of things to do on their hillsides. Hiking paths, cycling trails, lakeside picnic spots, and boutique wineries are just a few attractions in the mountains around San Jose.

What about some lower-altitude attractions? All of the San Jose neighborhoods contain a healthy number of parks, lakes, and sports fields. And if you get tired of looking at your own garden, head over to the Rose Gardens or the Overfelt Gardens.
This is the Bay Area, so we can’t forget all of that waterfront beauty. Directly northwest of San Jose is the Alviso Marina County Park, which is a beautiful place to walk in the afternoon with views of the bay and low-lying waters. Excellent School Choices for All Ages
When families ask themselves, “Is it worth living in San Jose?”, their children’s education is often one of the deciding factors.
High-quality education (with lots of choices) has long been one of the benefits of living in San Jose.
The top public high schools in San Jose according to a recent survey are:
- Dr. T.J. Owens Gilroy Early College Academy - ranked 36th in the US.
- Monta Vista High School - ranked 13th in California.
- Lynbrook High School - 97% graduation rate, the same as #1 and #2 on the list.
- Henry M. Gunn High School - ranked the top high school in Palo Alto.
- Saratoga High School - also ranked 24th in California.
The top public elementary schools in San Jose according to a recent survey are:
- Williams Elementary - ranked 31st in all of California.
- Graystone Elementary - very high reading and math proficiency.
- Los Alamitos Elementary - Higher than average reading and math performance.
- Booksin Elementary - 93% of teachers have over 3 years experience.
- Simonds Elementary - low 22-1 student-to-teacher ratio.

More Affordable Properties than Other Areas
Moving to residential areas can sometimes lower the costs of buying a home, but that’s not always the case. San Jose is a competitive real estate market, with plenty of factors that can cause some areas to soar in value, while others remain affordable.
